Handy Boiler Room Estimates and Facts

  1. One boiler horsepower requires .069 GPM of water.
  2. Steam per hour divided by 500 gives GPM of water required.
  3. A reduction of 40°F in the stack temperature increases efficiency by about 1%.
  4. Every 11°F added to the feedwater prior to going into the boiler increases the efficiency by 1%.
  5. 1/8" scale build-up can increase fuel consumption up to 4%.
  6. 1/8" soot build-up can increase fuel consumption up to 8%.
  7. Cost for a 1/2" steam leak at 100 PSIG could cost as much as $65,000 per year.
  8. For boiler room ventilation, allow a minimum of one (1) square inch for every 10,000 BTU/Hr. input.
  9. Flue gas breeching should be designed for approximately 5,000 ft./min. velocity.
  10. Acceptable flue gas velocity in stack is a minimum of 2,400 FPM and a maximum of 3,600 FPM
